Patsy Kelly was well-known and liked in the area
A man in his 30s is expected to appear in court in relation to the death of a homeless man in Naas on Saturday.
The 35-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the incident and was detained at Naas Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 as amended.
Patsy Kelly, the 58-year-old victim, died following an incident which occurred at Sarto Park in Naas on Saturday night.
Emergency services were called and he was rushed to Naas General Hospital.
However, he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Mr Kelly had been attempting to get a permanent home in the area in recent times. Local representatives had been actively trying to find him a home.
He was well-known and liked in the town but was known to have severe problems with alcohol.
Fine Gael councillor Darren Scully said the death was "desperately sad" and that Mr Kelly was a real character on the streets of Naas.
"He was always very good-natured and very friendly and nobody would have a bad word to say about him," said Cllr Scully.
"He was having problems finding a home and myself and other public representatives were trying to help him.
"He wasn't necessarily sleeping rough in that he would have had some friends and family. But he had no place to call home."
Gardaí appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have information to contact them in Naas Garda Station on 045 - 884300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
