Our somewhat disappointing summer is coming to a close but there may be a few good days left to enjoy.

Met Eireann are predicting a fairly unsettled period of weather, with sunny spells and heavy showers trading blows.

Over the coming days there is expected to be widespread sunny spells in the morning which gradually give way to heavy showers.

Widespread showers are expected to prevail this afternoon after a morning full of high temperatures and sunny spells.

Most of the showers will die away tonight or become isolated to western coastal regions, Met Eireann said.

There will be a bright start to tomorrow but, again, heavy showers will prevail in the afternoon following sunny spells.

On Saturday, sunny spells will be widespread during the morning, but cloud gradually building up and heavy showers breaking out in the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 16 to 18 degrees.

Showers will be a lot more isolated on Sunday morning but a good deal of dry and sunny weather will prevail for the day. Highs of 16 to 18 degrees and moderate southwesterly breezes.

From next Tuesday onwards, Met Eireann are expecting weather to be 'warm, sunny and calm with little or no wind.'

The elusive Azores High, which ensures good weather for Ireland, is currently building up northwards towards Iceland.

Temperatures will linger in the mid-teens as the 'Indian Summer' makes an appearance.

So, fret not! And rejoice in summer's last gasp.
