A policeman in Canada was hit with three flying knives after he entered a house that was 'booby trapped' against unwanted entrants.

Canada's national broadcaster CBC reports on the lucky escape for the officer who was called to assist a landlord at a building in St Thomas, a city in the province of Ontario.

The landlord was trying to gain entrance to an apartment where he believed an evicted tenant was trespassing.

The landlord was able to unlock the door but it still wouldn't open and it appeared to have been barricaded at the other side.

The officer then barged the door in but this triggered some sort of mechanism that sent three butter knives flying his way.

"It wasn't a sophisticated setup, but there's no doubt that the person who set it up intended to harm whoever opened the door," St. Thomas Police Const. Tanya Calvert told CBC.

The cop was hit in the hand and chest by two of the knives, with a third one missing and landing on the floor.

"The knives were jammed up in the doorway, so when they did release, it was with quite a bit of velocity, so they did hit (the officer) with quite a bit of force," said Calvert.

"Usually, we anticipate a dog or something along those lines. Flying knives are not something that we've dealt with on a regular basis," she added.

For obvious reasons police are not releasing details on exactly how the booby trap was set up but they are continuing to investigate the incident.
