A 28-YEAR-OLD man is facing trial over a drive-by shooting in Dublin.

John Reilly with an address at Belcamp Lane, Coolock and the Naul Road, Ballymun, in

Dublin appeared in court on Wednesday charged with firearms offences in connection with an alleged shooting at Edenmore Crescent, Dublin 5 on June 12 last year.

He was remanded on bail with numerous conditions to appear again in November pending
the preparation of a book of evidence.

Objecting to bail, Garda Alan Roche told Judge Cormac Dunne at Dublin District Court that there were three people travelling in a car and there was a lone person in the back seat who “discharged a firearm at a number of people in a front garden narrowly missing same”.

The incident was allegedly captured on CCTV, the car’s registration number was obtained from a witness and gardai were given a description of clothing, Judge Dunne was told.

Gda Roche said that 20 minutes later the accused and a number of other males were stopped but they allegedly fled.

Clothing was recovered matching the description given including a balaclava and a hoody which had gunshot residue similar to cartridges and lead pellets retrieved at the scene, he said.

DNA evidence was also obtained, the court heard. A sawn-off shot gun was also recovered, the court was told.

Mr Reilly has not yet indicated how he will plead and remained silent during the hearing.

Judge Dunne also heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed trial on indictment meaning the accused man will be tried in the circuit court, which has tougher sentencing powers.

Garda Roche agreed with defence solicitor John Feaheny that Mr Reilly had met him by appointment to be charged and the incident happened last year.

He also agreed that his fears would be allayed by certain bail conditions which Judge Dunne imposed.

Bail was set in the defendant’s own bond of €500 and Mr Reilly was ordered to sign on daily at a Garda station, reside at his address at Belcamp Lane, Coolock, provide a phone number to gardai and be available for contact at all times, stay out of the Edenmore area and have no contact with witnesses.

Legal aid was granted after the judge was told Mr Reilly was unemployed and a statement of his means was furnished to the court.
