A manhunt is underway after the senseless murder of taxi driver Martin Mulligan who was viciously knifed and left to bleed to death on the side of an isolated road in Kilcurry, Co Louth.

Reports indicate that the dad of two may have been stabbed after he chased more than one assailant who tried to flee from his taxi

The possibility that the attackers fled to Northern Ireland is being examined and detectives have sought the help of the PSNI in their murder investigation.

Mr Mulligan, from Lower Point Road, Dundalk, is survived by his wife Grainne, and his two daughters, Sharon and Shauna.

The 53-year-old was viciously stabbed a number of times, and had injuries to his stomach and leg.

Supt Gerry Curley of Dundalk Garda station said:

“We’ll be seeking assistance as it [the crime scene] is close to the border with Northern Ireland”.

Detectives were last night conducting door-to-door inquiries in the vicinity of where the body was found.

Supt Curley said: “We are appealing to anyone that used Martin’s services after 9.30pm last night, or his car 07-LH-5599 during the course of the night, any person that was in the Carnmore, Kilcurry, area from 1am to 3.30am.”
