The Sandy Row bonfire was set on fire this morning
The Sandy Row bonfire has been set alight 16 days ahead of schedule.
Kids have been collecting wood for the bonfire, which was due to be lit during traditional 11th night celebrations, for months.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service received a call at around 9.30am this morning to say the structure was on fire.
An NIFRS spokesman said: “The Police Service of Northern Ireland are facilitating with traffic distribution and the incident is ongoing at this stage.”
It is unclear who set fire to the bonfire, but it had clearly been in one of the later stages of construction.
The bonfire was being built adjacent to the Days Inn hotel in Sandy Row.
