Nine people have been arrested in connection with a garda investigation into illegal coursing at a number of locations in Tipperary.

A number of "Lurcher” breed dogs have been seized along with equipment involved in this illegal activity.

The people were arrested following a joint operation by An Garda Siochana and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

They were arrested and are currently detained under the Provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended for offences under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 at Cahir, Thurles, Tipperary, Templemore and Clonmel Garda Stations.

According to a garda spokesperson: “This operation targeted persons who illegally trespass on lands with Lurcher dogs and engage in offences contrary the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 and carries a penalty of up to five years imprisonment on indictment.”

Anyone with information on this or any other crime can contact Thurles Garda Station 0504-25100, their local Garda Station or Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
