An Irishman has drowned in the sea off the popular Algarve resort of Albufeira.

Paramedics tried to revive the 69-year-old without success after he was pulled out of the water by a lifeboat just before 4pm on Saturday.

The tragedy occurred at Peneco Beach, one of two Albufeira’s two beaches.

He was declared dead on the quayside of Albufeira Marina where his body was taken after being plucked from the sea.

A post-mortem was due to take place this morning to determine if the drowning was due to a health problem.

He was described locally as an Irish holidaymaker but has not been named.

The tragedy happened as tourists and locals took advantage of unseasonably high temperatures to flock to Algarve beaches after heavy flooding over the last few days.

Francisco Navio, 79, died after his car was swept away during a storm last Sunday which uprooted trees and washed away roads.

In contrast temperatures yesterday/on Saturday in the area reached 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit).

At the end of August David Keogh, 29, from Greystones, Co. Wicklow was found dead in a swimming pool at the the Pine Sun Park resort in Albufeira.

He was holidaying with family and friends.
