Members of an organised crime gang targeted a rival mob in an alleged shooting incident during which a car was rammed and another set alight.

Rival members of the Thompson and Rattigan gangs, who have been embroiled in a fierce feud that has left several dead, spotted one another while driving through the area.

The Ford Focus carrying members of the Thompson gang chased the Volvo carrying associates of the Rattigan mob.

Several shots are believed to have been fired at the Volvo, but no one was hit.

A witness said the two cars raced along Sperrin Road, with one car trying to ram the other off the road.

"The Focus and the Volvo were flying down the road, and then the Focus tried to ram the other car," said the witness.

"The Focus then drove on to Ben Madigan Road with the group jumping out before setting it ablaze and fleeing."

A 20-year-old man was later transferred to hospital with injuries he sustained after his car was rammed.

"A number of shots were allegedly fired, but the matter is still under investigation," a source said. "They were driving down the road swerving into one another. It was dangerous on a busy residential road.

"One man is being treated for minor injuries, and so far he has refused to assist gardai."

The injured man is an associate of senior members of the Brian Rattigan mob who are serving lengthy jail terms for feud-related shootings.

In one incident, the home of an elderly woman who had no connections to crime was targeted, with a number of shots fired through the front window.
