Temperatures are set to plummet this week following a period of unusually warm weather throughout the country.
However there’s no chance of a white Christmas, according to Met Eireann’s Pat Clarke who said "There's no sign of it at the moment, it's just not cold enough."
“The temperatures will be up and down all week. Some days they will be up at 10C to 12C and other days it will be closer to 7C, with temperatures dropping a lot lower later in the week, maybe between 1C and 5C - around normal for the time of year,” said the meteorologist.
Unsettled weather is on the way this week with wind, rain and even bouts of frost predicted.
Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow Wind Warning for Ireland today as gusts of up to 100kph are predicted in some places.
“There’ll be very wet and windy weather sweeping in from the Atlantic over Sunday night and Monday morning,” said Pat Clarke.
“There’ll be heavy rain for a spell but that will level off over the course of Monday, but we’re not finished with the rain at all.”
Today’s heavy rainfall is expected to clear by this afternoon, but further rainfall is expected tonight and into tomorrow morning.
Temperatures will be colder this week than of late, with patches of frost even being predicted for Thursday and Friday.
Meanwhile, Irish Water Safety has issued warnings to people who are planning charity swims on Christmas, St Stephen's or New Year's days.
For the first time in nearly 40 years, there will be full moon on Christmas Day, causing strong tidal streams and rip currents to increase in strength and speed.
The body has asked people organising these swims to notify the Irish Coast Guard and local gardaí on details of each swim, and to be wary of winter waters.
