A TEENAGE boy and girl are facing trial accused of taking part in a violent gang robbery of a man in Dublin's Temple Bar.

The boy, aged 15, and the 17-year-old girl appeared at the Dublin Children's Court charged with taking €30 from the man in a robbery and being involved in a violent disorder with five others at Temple Bar on July 23, 2014.

The two teens, who cannot be named because they are minors, are also charged with assault causing harm to the man.

The DPP has recommended they should face trial on indictment, meaning the case should go forward to the Circuit Court, which has tougher sentencing powers.

They have not yet entered pleas and must first face a preliminary hearing to decide their trial venue.

Despite the DPP's recommendation, the juvenile court has discretion to accept jurisdiction for a serious case by taking into consideration the age and level of maturity of a defendant, as well as other information thought to be relevant.

The pair, who  were accompanied to court by family members and their lawyers, were remanded on bail by Judge Alan Mitchell.

The boy will appear again later this week while the girl is due back in court in February.
