A "potentially violent and dangerous" man has gone on the run after fleeing during supervised leave from a mental health unit in the UK.

Safdar Shah ran off from a post office in Homerton High Street, east London, at around 11.30am on Monday and police say he will become increasingly dangerous to the public without vital medication.

The 35-year-old, who has paranoid schizophrenia, has his passport with him and it is feared he may try to flee the country.

Detective Inspector Paul Ridley said: "My investigation team are completing extensive enquiries to try to locate this potentially dangerous and unpredictable man. The risk he poses to the public exacerbates the longer he is without his medication.

"I would again reiterate that Shah has a history of violence and should not be approached by the public. If you see him please call police immediately on 999."

Shah is 5ft 7in and has dark hair and a full beard. When last seen he was wearing a grey hooded top, a dark-coloured body warmer, blue jeans and dark-coloured trainers.
