A business premises has been hit by armed raiders on seven occasions over the past few months.

Staff at a Centra shop, located in the Kiltalown estate, Jobstown, Tallaght are currently living in fear while working at the store.

The perpetrators have used a variety of weapons during each incident while threatening staff.

Earlier this month, two masked men - armed with a sledgehammer and a machete - took the contents of the till and fled in a grey Mitsubishi Space Star, while a further three armed raids were carried out over the last two weeks.

An aggravated hold-up also took place last month when thieves struck on the day that child allowances were scheduled to be paid out from the post office ahead of the Christmas period.

However, the robbery "resulted in people coming for money that wasn't there".

Gardai are investigating whether the same gang are behind all seven armed robberies, while also investigating if the thugs are responsible for several other post office robberies in the Tallaght area.

A worker at the Kiltalown premises, who did not wish to be named, described how the monthly armed hold-ups are taking a massive toll on the business as well as on employees.

"Staff are scared out of their wits coming to work ... it's not right that people trying to earn a living are traumatised in this way," the worker said.

They also revealed how counselling is now being offered to employees due to the high number of armed incidents being carried out at the store.

Responding to a parliamentary question tabled by Fianna Fail TD Niall Collins about the "alarming" number of armed robberies at the premises, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said that the incidents were being taken seriously and that she was awaiting a report on the matter.

"I can assure the Deputy that An Garda Siochana treat crimes of this nature extremely seriously and that Garda management deploy the necessary crime prevention and investigation resources accordingly. I have however, requested a report from the Garda authorities in relation to the specific incidents referred to and I will contact the Deputy directly when the report is to hand," Ms Fitzgerald said.
