Umbrellas will be an essential accessory for the week ahead, with spells of heavy rain and unsettled weather expected to dominate our weather.

While the weekend saw temperatures several degrees higher than normal for January, heavy rain is soon expected to sweep across the country - with Met Éireann warning of the risk of flooding in many areas.

Storm Jonas, which is responsible for at least 19 deaths in the US, will makes its way to Ireland in the coming days.

However we will not experience snowfall - as the US is on the colder side of the Atlantic weather system.

Temperatures yesterday reached between 10 and 15 degrees, but felt slightly cooler with strong southerly gusts.

Joanna Donnelly, forecaster with Met Éireann, said the warmer weather came from the arrival of a warm southern air flow from the tropics.

Significant downpours are expected tomorrow, with heavy rain in all areas at times. That rainfall is expected to continue into tomorrow night and Wednesday morning.

"As always, mountainous areas will be affected, as well as areas vulnerable to run-off from mountains," warned Ms Donnelly.

However, she added the amount of rain that could fall nationwide would not be known until today. And it may be too soon to pack away scarves and gloves, as tonight's temperatures could drop to between zero and three degrees.

Met Éireann predicts that rain will develop in the west this evening, before spreading across the country by dawn tomorrow.

As that rain clears, Wednesday night will turn cold with frost, icy patches and temperatures falling as low as -2 degrees.

Thursday will be cold and bright with temperatures of seven to 10 degrees.

Friday will be milder with values of 10 to 12 degrees - but with further outbreaks of rain that are expected to continue into next weekend.
