A plumber who helped himself to a woman’s car after meeting her on a matchmaking website has been sentenced.

34-year-old David Brennan went back to his date’s home but took her car as he had no other way of getting home.

Brennan, who has 26 previous convictions, gave false details to the woman he dated, but gardai later found the car at his home in Tallaght.

Blanchardstown District Court heard that Brennan’s partner has been battling cancer for a number of years.

Brennan, with an address at Redwood Lawns in Tallaght, admitted the unauthorised taking of a vehicle at Erris Square, Waterville in Blanchardstown on October 20, 2014.

The court heard from Garda Martina Drew who said that the defendant had met the victim on a dating website and had arranged a date.

The two went on a second date, at the end of which Brennan was in the woman’s home where he took the keys to her Nissan Almeria car and drove it home.

Defence solicitor Kelly Breen said Brennan was "at a location far from where he wanted to be", so he took the keys of the car to make his way home.

Ms Breen asked the judge not to send Brennan to jail, as he is working and supporting his sick partner.

Judge David McHugh said Brennan's behaviour was "high-handed and cavalier".

The judge sentenced Brennan to four months in prison but suspended it for 12 months.
