Martin McDermott
A notorious garda killer who later hit the headlines when he escaped from prison has now re-located to the north-Dublin suburb of Finglas from his native Donegal.
Martin McDermott (29) recently moved into a house in the Ballygall area of Finglas with his girlfriend. Sources said that his movements will be closely monitored by gardai.
McDermott, from Raphoe, Co Donegal, was controversially released from the Midlands Prison last month, four years into a seven-year sentence for killing Garda Gary McLoughlin in Co Donegal in 2009.
It is understood that the criminal, who has 91 previous convictions, decided to move to north Dublin after being made aware that he was not welcome in his home town because of his brutal criminal past.
Garda McLoughlin (24) died in hospital 24 hours after McDermott rammed his patrol car in Burt, Co Donegal, in December 2009.
McDermott was speeding towards Derry when he steered a stolen Opel Astra into Gda McLoughlin's patrol car.
He was twice the legal drink-drive limit at the time, and had led gardai on a high speed chase for 30km.
It emerged that the average speed McDermott drove at during the chase was 150kph.
He was jailed in July 2011 after being found guilty of manslaughter.
There was outrage when he escaped from the low-security open prison at Loughlin House in Co Cavan just eight months later.
While behind bars, he had been repeatedly disciplined for a variety of offences - including absconding from the open prison.
When rearrested in Derry eight days after his escape, he assaulted PSNI officers and was jailed for four months in the North for that and for resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour before being extradited back to Ireland.
When he was returned to jail in the Republic of Ireland, McDermott was disciplined at least 10 times for bad behaviour which included threatening other inmates as well as prison officers and being caught in possession of prohibited items.
