Court: Nugent was fined €100 for speeding on Christmas morning

RTE head of sport Ryle Nugent has been fined €100 for speeding on Christmas morning.

The rugby commentator appeared in court today on a speeding charge for driving in excess of the 60kph limit at the N11 in Stillorgan in south Dublin at 8.42am on December 25th last.

A Go Safe speed detection operator gave evidence and told Judge John Brennan at Dublin District Court that the sports journalist's '05-reg car was clocked doing 75kph in a 60kph zone.

A fixed penalty notice was sent out but it appeared Nugent had moved address and did not notify the motor tax office. As a result a summons was issued.

The broadcaster, who had an address in Ranelagh in Dublin, produced his licence and apologised “for wasting the court's time”.

He explained to the judge that he had not received the fixed penalty notice because he had moved house but once he found out from his former neighbours that gardai were looking for him, he made contact.

Judge Brennan noted he had turned up to face the case and gave him a €100 fine which, he warned, has to be paid in three months or there would be a three day jail term in default.
