An investigation is underway after an Irishman was killed in a construction accident in the city of London earlier today.

The construction worker was killed by a falling pane of glass at a Paddington office block which is undergoing a £66million renovation.

It is reported the man has been named as John Sweeney (51), who is originally from between Creeslough and Dunfanaghy in County Donegal.

Jerry Swain, London regional secretary of the construction workers’ union UCATT, said today: "This accident shows that questions need to be answered in our industry.

“This kind of accident shouldn’t happen. We also need to review the procedures and risk assessments to ensure that similar accidents are not repeated.”

A spokesperson for Land Securities told West End Extra: "We are deeply saddened to learn that a contractor has died in an accident at one of our development sites. We are working closely with the contractors and relevant authorities to investigate the cause of this tragic accident and we have suspended work on site until further notice.

"Our thoughts are with the individual’s family and friends at this very sad time."

The Health and Safety Executive have launched an investigation while police say the death is being treated as unexplained.
